En el marco de la 2º Conferencia Ambiental, organizada por la Unión Industriales para Saneamiento Cuencas Matanza-Riachuelo y Reconquista (Uiscumarr), cuyos ejes de discusión fueron el cambio climático y las experiencias de saneamiento de las cuencas mencionadas, el presidente de la MC Mehta Environmental Foundation (India), doctor Mahesh Chandra Mehta [1], fue entrevistado por Andrea Méndez Brandam, directora de NOTICIAS POSITIVAS para el Uiscumarr TV .
AMB: -Teniendo en cuenta toda su experiencia en litigios, y su experiencia viendo y resolviendo los problemas de la gente, ¿qué impresión tiene sobre la actualidad de los temas ambientales?
MCM: -Veo una situación ambiental que empeora día a día debido al cambio climático, entre otros factores. Hemos perturbado la ecología del mundo, y como seres humanos somos responsables de ello. Ahora, ha llegado el momento en el que debemos entender que no podemos jugar más con la naturaleza, porque la naturaleza tiene sus propias leyes, sus propios principios, y debemos respetarlos. Los seres humanos somos parte de la naturaleza y no podemos alejarnos de ella. Por eso es tan importante que entendamos nuestro rol en esta situación que vivimos. Y ese rol debe involucrar a los jóvenes y a todos los ciudadanos del mundo. Porque este movimiento va a ayudar a sanar a la Madre Tierra. Y este saneamiento solamente puede ocurrir si comenzamos a actuar, y nuestras acciones deben ser transparentes para asegurar el futuro del planeta para las generaciones futuras.
-Hoy hay muchas ideas, muchas palabras, y todo parece tener un propósito. ¿Estamos haciendo lo suficiente para lograr esos propósitos que nos planteamos?
-Creo que es una cuestión de necesidad y avaricia. Si la idea es satisfacer nuestra avaricia, incluso con diez planetas como el nuestro no lo vamos a lograr. Lo esencial es que frenemos y nos preguntemos: ¿estamos en el camino correcto?. Y si la respuesta es no, entonces debemos preguntarnos qué debe hacerse. Esa es la necesidad hoy, porque si perdemos otros 10, 20 o 50 años, todos nuestros recursos van a desaparecer. Las especies vivas en oceános, en ríos, están siendo pescadas a un ritmo demasiado rápido, sin pensar en que su supervivencia es crucial para asegurar nuestra supervivencia: nosotros dependemos de ellos, ellos no dependen de nosotros. Entonces, debemos asegurarnos de que esas especies sean protegidas. Porque tener armas destructivas en nuestro poder no significa que seamos todopoderosos, que somos fuertes. No debemos usar nuestras herramientas para la extinción de las especies vivas en el planeta tierra.
-¿Podría compartirnos las visiones de su fundación? He visto que trabaja con niños, he visto gente reunida en círculo, hablando y compartiendo. Entonces, supongo que a esta altura, con todo el trabajo que usted ha realizado, ha descubierto una metodología, una forma de enseñar. ¿Puede compartírnosla?
Los chicos en edad escolar, los chicos que están estudiando en universidades, todo es parte de las Marchas Verdes que instauré hace más de 20 años. A través de estas marchas intento aprender de las personas, y compartir con ellos la información y el conocimiento que tengo. Esa es mi perspectiva, y todo tipo de personas vienen a nuestras marchas. Fundamentalmente, yo intento motivar a los niños a que planten árboles en sus escuelas, en sus universidades, en sus pueblos, en donde sea que estén viviendo.
Una vez, un arquitecto amigo mío me vino a ver y me dijo que su hijo cumplía 1 año y quería que fuera a su cumpleaños. Entonces, fui a un vivero y compre una pequeña planta y ése fue mi regalo de cumpleaños. Le dije al arquitecto que solamente necesitaba un lugar adecuado para que la planta crezca, y que la planten allí. El niño se fascinó tanto con la planta que cuando tenía 2 años medía su altura con la altura de la planta, y esta crecía a un ritmo mucho mayor que el suyo. El niño se fascinó con la planta, y se fascinó tanto que motivó a otros niños a que planten sus árboles también. Este tipo de cosas deben ser aprendidas, no pueden adquirirse. Debes aprender, verlo por tú mismo.
Por ahora, hemos plantado más de un millón de árboles, en todo tipo de tierras disponibles. Hemos motivado a la gente, no es que yo he plantado cada árbol, sino que los árboles fueron plantados por la gente, y esa gente se llenó de felicidad. Además, los árboles les dan mucho a otras especies, como los pájaros: les dan comida, un lugar para vivir, y tantas otras cosas.
-Está hablando de pequeñas cosas, de paciencia y de confianza. Nos está enseñando el camino que debemos seguir.
Eso es muy importante, porque necesitamos entender que no somos inmortales y que tenemos un ciclo de vida acotado. Este deseo que la gente tiene de vivir 100, 200 años incluso, no tiene sentido, porque eso no es nada comparado con los millones de años de historia. Nosotros somos nada, somos una partícula de polvo. Entonces, ¿por qué deberíamos estar tan orgullosos? Seguimos creyendo que podemos conquistar todo.
-Como abogado, ¿qué mensaje le gustaría darle a la nueva generación de abogados?
-La ley, si es bien utilizada, puede darle forma a una Nación. Puede hacer que la gente sea más obediente de la ley. Pero en el liderazgo político, si las leyes se quedan solo en el papel y no se practican, entonces el ciudadano queda desprotegido. ¿Quién es competente para ver esto? Los estudiantes de derecho, los profesores, los jueces: todos tienen la responsabilidad de asegurarse con honestidad de que la ley se cumpla. Si hablamos de justicia ambiental, ¿dónde está exactamente? No hay justicia ambiental y, como debería ser impartida para todos los seres vivos, entonces como abogado puedo ser sensible a esa realidad y esa sensibilidad va a garantizar que se activen nuevos mecanismos de justicia siendo un mejor ciudadano también. Porque primero que nada soy ciudadano, luego abogado. Como ciudadano tengo responsabilidades. Un juez, un parlamentario, un primer ministro, un presidente o lo que sea son antes que nada ciudadanos. La ley no está para decorar los estantes, necesita ser aplicada y si esto sucede la realidad se transforma.

AMB: -I would like to know, with all your experience not only in litigation but also with people, seeing in first hand the problems and solving them, what do you see right now regarding environmental issues?
MCM: -I see that the environment situation is getting worse each day because of the climate change, and so many other factors. We have disturbed the whole ecology of the world, and we as human beings are responsible for that. Now, the time has come that we should understand that we cannot play more with nature, because nature has its own laws, its own principles, and we should respect that. The human beings are one part of this whole nature, they cannot become a nature in its own way, that’s what I’m thinking. And for that, it’s very important for us to understand what should be our role in such situation. And our role should be to involve young children, to involve citizens, and the whole in the movement. Because this movement is going to help to heal the mother earth. And this healing can only take place if we start acting, and our actions should be so transparent that the future of the world becomes safe for the future generations.
-I see a lot of talking, a lot of new words and ideas, everything seems to have a purpose. Are we walking the talk enough to achieve this task?
-It is a question of need and greed. If we want to satisfy the greed, even if we had ten planets like ours, we would not be able to fulfill our greed. The essential thing is to stop and ask ourselves: are we on the right path?. And if the answer is no, then we should ask ourselves what needs to be done. That is the need today, because if we lose another 10, 20 or 50 years, all of our resources will be gone. The living species, in the oceans, in the rivers, are being fished very speedily, and without thinking that their survival is very important for our survival: we are dependent on them, they are not dependent on us. So we have to see that this species are protected. Because having destructive weapons in our hands doesn’t mean that we have become mighty, that we are strong. We should not misuse this things for the extinction of the living species on earth.
-Can you share with us the views of your foundation? I’ve seen you in pictures with kids, and people gathering in circles, talking and sharing. So I guess that at this point, with all the work that you’ve done, you’ve discovered a methodology, a way to teach. Can you share that with us?
-The school children, and the college boys and girls, all come to this Green Marches that I started more than 20 years ago. Through this marches I try to learn from people, and share with them the information and knowledge that I’ve got. That’s my whole perspective, and all sorts of people come to the marches. There’s children, and I motivate them to plant trees, in their schools, in their colleges, in their villages, wherever they are living.
Once, an architect friend came to see me and told me that it was his son’s first birthday, and since I was there, he wanted me to attend. I went to a plant nursery and bought a small seedling and I gave him that. I told the architect I only needed one proper pit in his house to plant it. The child became so fascinated that he started watering the plant once he was 2 years old or so, and he used to measure his height with the plant’s height, and the plant’s growth was much faster than the child’s. He got fascinated by it. And then, that child became so fascinated later on that he motivated others. This things have to be learned, it cannot be acquired. You have to learn, to see it for yourself.
So far, we have planted more than a million trees, in any available land. We motivated people, it is not that I planted every tree, but they were planted and the people were very happy later on. Trees also give so much to birds, it becomes food for birds, they give shelter to birds and so many other things.
-You are talking about little things, about patiences and confidence. You are telling us that this is a path that we need to walk.
-That is very important, because we need to understand that we are not immortal, and we have a very limited lifespan. And in this wish that the people should live more than 100 years, even 200, that’s nothing compared to millions and millions of years of history. We are nothing, we are like a speck of dust you know. So why should we be so proud of everything? We are still thinking that we should conquer everything.
-As a law man, what message would you like to give to the new generation of lawyers?
-The law, if used in the right perspective, it can shape the nation. And it can make the people obedient to law. But if the political leadership, if the laws are enacted and this laws are made on paper only and are not enforced, then as a citizen you are helpless. And who is competent to see? Law students, professors, judges, they all have the responsibility to see, honestly, that the law is enforced. If we talk about environmental justice, where is that environmental justice? There’s no environmental justice. So if this environmental justice, if it has to be given to every living thing, then as a lawyer I should be very sensitive, and my sensitivity will help to see that the compliance takes place. First I am a citizen, then I am a lawyer. As a citizen I have my responsibility. A judge, a parlamentarian, a prime minister, a president, or whatever, are first citizens. Laws are not for decorating the shelves, they need to be enforced, and if they are enforced of course the situations will change.
